The short answer

A straightforward Wall Connector install - panel in the garage, charger mounted a few feet away - is usually the cheapest electrical project a homeowner can book. The expensive versions all come from the same four places: a long wire run, a panel that needs upgrading, trenching to a detached structure, or a difficult permit jurisdiction. The Wall Connector runs up to 48 amps continuous, which by code requires a 60-amp circuit. Whether your panel can support that is not about the main breaker number on the door - it comes from a load calculation, a standard worksheet that adds up everything your home can draw at once.

Line items to look for: the breaker and wire, conduit, the permit fee, the inspection, drywall patching, and labor. A quote that omits the permit is not cheaper - it is an unpermitted install, which can disqualify utility rebates and come up at resale.

Ask for the load calculation. Any electrician recommending a panel upgrade should be able to show you the math. If the recommendation comes with no worksheet, get another quote.

Think about the next EV, not just this one. Upsizing conduit or wire during an open-wall run costs little. Adding it later costs a second job. If a second EV is plausible, say so before quoting.
