How ordering a Tesla works in 2026

Ordering is done online: you configure the car, pay an order fee, and then wait for a delivery window. There is no negotiation and very little back-and-forth, so nearly all of the useful preparation happens before you submit the order. Below is the sequence most buyers follow, with links to the detailed guide for each step.

The ordering sequence

  1. 1. Decide the model and trim first

Range, wheels, paint, interior, tow package, and driver-assist options are the choices that are awkward or impossible to change once the order is placed. Work these out before you touch the configurator seriously.

  2. 2. Price the total, not the headline number

Add destination and order fees, sales tax, registration, and any documentation charges to the configurator price. Then subtract only the incentives you have actually confirmed you qualify for.

  3. 3. Sort financing or payment before you order

You can finance through Tesla or bring your own lender. Either way, knowing your rate and approved amount in advance keeps the order from stalling later, and it gives you a real monthly number instead of an estimate.

  4. 4. Open a referral link if you intend to use one

Open the referral link and continue into Tesla's ordering flow from it, before you submit the order. Confirm any expected buyer benefit shown by Tesla before you place the order. Tesla determines eligibility and benefits.

  5. 5. Place the order and plan charging

The order fee is charged at submission. Use the waiting period to plan home charging and, if you need an electrician, to book one rather than scrambling after delivery.

  6. 6. Prepare for the delivery appointment

Delivery windows are short and appointments are often shorter. Know what to bring, what to inspect, and what to do if something is wrong before you accept the car.
