VIN assignment is a milestone, not a countdown

It is tempting to turn VIN assignment into a formula: VIN today, delivery a certain number of days later. Tesla's current guidance does not support a universal countdown. The company says vehicle availability timing varies with production, logistics and the timely completion of delivery tasks, and it tells customers to rely on the Tesla app for the latest timing.

That distinction matters because two buyers can receive VINs under different logistical circumstances. One vehicle may already be close to its delivery location while another may still need more transportation time. The VIN itself does not tell you enough to calculate that difference reliably.

What to do immediately after a VIN appears

1. Check the Tesla app for new tasks. The app may unlock VIN-specific steps as your order moves toward delivery.
2. Handle insurance. Tesla's current U.S. guidance specifically says to upload proof of insurance in the app once you receive a VIN.
3. Keep financing and payment moving. Complete the payment or lender steps Tesla shows for your transaction rather than waiting for a guessed delivery date.
4. Finish registration and trade-in tasks.Incomplete pre-delivery tasks can slow the handoff process.
5. Watch for the scheduling notification.Do not assume a VIN means you should already have an appointment link.

Tesla also lists insurance details, final payment and required documents among the items that must be completed before delivery. Requirements can vary by purchase method and location.

When can you actually schedule delivery?

Tesla's current wording is more useful than any forum estimate: scheduling becomes available once a vehicle is assigned to your order and Tesla has an estimate for when it will arrive at the designated delivery location. At that point, you receive a notification in the Tesla app to choose a delivery appointment.

So if you have a VIN but no scheduling option yet, that does not automatically indicate a problem. Keep the required tasks current and use the app's latest delivery window as the status that matters.
