Tesla financing vs a credit union: what to compare before delivery
Tesla supports third-party financing, so this is not an either/or you have to guess at. Get a credit union pre-approval, apply through Tesla once your order is placed, then take the lower APR at the same term. The only real work is comparing the two offers correctly and making sure the funding mechanics are settled before your delivery appointment.

TL;DR
- Tesla accepts outside financing. A credit union loan is a normal, supported path.
- Apply to both. Two quotes cost you one credit-shopping window and give you leverage on rate.
- Compare APR at identical terms - never monthly payment against monthly payment.
- Tesla financing wins on convenience; credit unions often win on rate and on add-on pricing.
- Pre-approvals expire. Match yours to your actual delivery window, not your order date.
- If you use outside financing, confirm how and when funds reach Tesla before delivery day.
Side by side
| What to compare | Tesla financing | Credit union / bank |
|---|---|---|
| Where you apply | Inside your Tesla Account after the order is placed; Tesla routes it to partner lenders. | Directly with the credit union, usually before or during your order wait. |
| Rate | Set by the partner lender that approves you; varies by credit, term, and state. | Set by the credit union, often with published member rate sheets you can read in advance. |
| Convenience | Highest. Everything lives in the Tesla app and funds automatically at delivery. | You handle the payoff mechanics: check, wire, or lender-direct payment before handoff. |
| Negotiating leverage | None on price - Tesla prices are fixed - but the quote is a useful benchmark. | A pre-approval gives you a hard number to compare Tesla's offer against. |
| Timing pressure | Approvals expire and may need to be refreshed if your delivery slips. | Pre-approvals expire on the lender's schedule. Confirm the window and rate lock. |
| Trade-in | Can be handled in the same flow as the Tesla order. | Trade-in still goes through Tesla; the loan side is separate. |
Rates, terms, and available lenders vary by applicant and state, and change frequently. Nothing here is a rate quote. Verify current terms with Tesla and with your lender.
Where each option tends to win
Tesla financing
The strongest argument is that it is frictionless. The application lives in your Tesla Account, the paperwork is electronic, and funding happens as part of the delivery flow rather than as a separate errand. If your delivery window is tight, or you are already juggling a trade-in and an out-of-state registration, that matters more than a small rate difference. It is also the fastest way to get a real number attached to your actual VIN and price.
A credit union
Credit unions are member-owned and often publish their auto rate sheets openly, which means you can see the rate tier you would land in before you apply. They also tend to price gap coverage and extended warranties separately and more cheaply than a bundled offer. The main cost is coordination: you own the job of getting funds to Tesla on time.
Doing both
This is what most buyers should do. A pre-approval is a benchmark, not a commitment. If Tesla's offer beats it, take Tesla's and enjoy the simpler close. If it does not, you already have the alternative in hand and no scrambling is required.

Line items worth checking on both offers
0/10- APR, not the monthly payment. A longer term can hide a worse rate.
- Available loan terms and what each does to total interest.
- Total interest paid over the full term, not just the payment difference.
- Prepayment penalties or early-payoff restrictions.
- Down payment required and whether it changes the rate tier.
- Whether the rate is a promotional or new-EV special with its own conditions.
- Rate-lock length on a pre-approval, and whether it survives a delivery delay.
- Any membership, application, or title fees on the credit union side.
- Gap insurance and extended warranty add-ons - price them separately, never bundled into the payment.
- How the lender pays Tesla, and how long that takes before your delivery date.
Common mistakes
- • Comparing payments instead of APR. A 84-month loan at a higher rate can look cheaper monthly and cost thousands more overall.
- • Letting a pre-approval expire. Delivery windows move. If yours slips a month, check the expiration date before it lapses.
- • Assuming funds move instantly. A lender check or wire takes business days. Ask early, not the week of delivery.
- • Buying gap or a warranty inside the payment. Price each add-on on its own. Rolled into a loan, they earn interest too.
- • Counting an incentive you have not confirmed. Financing math built on an unconfirmed rebate is not real math. Check your state and utility programs first.

Financing steps to close out before handoff
0/9- Get a credit union pre-approval in writing with the APR, term, and expiration date.
- Apply through Tesla once your order is placed so you have both numbers side by side.
- Compare APR at the same term length, not payment against payment.
- Ask the credit union exactly how funds reach Tesla and how many business days it takes.
- Confirm your delivery window and check the pre-approval will still be valid on that date.
- Decide on the down payment and have those funds liquid and settled.
- Ask whether a delivery delay requires a re-application or a new credit pull.
- Upload any documents Tesla requests promptly - income or residency verification can hold up funding.
- Verify insurance is active on the VIN before the delivery appointment.
FAQ
Does Tesla let you use outside financing?
Yes. Tesla sells directly and accepts payment from a third-party lender, so a credit union or bank loan is a normal path. You still place and configure the order with Tesla; only the money comes from elsewhere. Confirm the current process on Tesla's financing support pages, because the exact steps and accepted payment methods change over time.
Should I apply for both?
For many buyers, yes. Applying to both gives you two real numbers instead of one. Ask each lender how its application affects your credit and compare the offers within the lender's approval window rather than letting either one expire.
When should I apply, before or after I order?
Get the credit union pre-approval whenever you like - it costs nothing and sets your benchmark. Tesla's own financing application is tied to a placed order, and approvals have an expiration, so applying too early in a long wait can mean re-applying later.
Does financing choice affect a referral benefit?
Referral benefits are set by Tesla and are tied to how the order is placed, not to which lender funds it. Nothing here should change your financing decision. If you intend to use a referral link, open it and go into the order flow from it before you submit the order.
What about leasing?
Leasing is a different decision with different math, and a credit union loan is not a substitute for it. If you are weighing lease against purchase, compare total cost of the lease term plus the disposition or buyout, and check whether leasing affects eligibility for any incentive you are counting on.

If you are about to place the order
Financing does not change referral eligibility, but order timing does. If you intend to use a referral link, open it and continue into Tesla's order flow before you submit. Tesla determines eligibility and benefits, which may change at any time.
